The MSD of Lawrence Township is pleased to announce its intent to expand the Spanish Immersion Program currently housed exclusively at Forest Glen Elementary to include Kindergarten and Grade One at Skiles Test Elementary School beginning the 2018-2019 school year and expanding annually through Grade Six. Supporting this initiative is a $50,000 Dual Language Immersion Pilot Program grant from the Indiana Department of Education.
Skiles Test is currently undergoing a multi-million-dollar renovation which will facilitate the grand opening of not only a new instructional program in 2018, but also a newly renovated school. Funds from the DLI grant will support intensive professional development with a national consultant in the area of bi-literacy. Funds will also support teacher recruitment, program marketing, curricular stipends, and new Spanish language signage and classroom supplies. Unique to the Skiles Test expansion is the blending of the immersion program with the current state-accredited STEM program. Not only will students receive core instruction in Spanish, but they will continue existing programming in robotics, coding, and environmental science. Long range planning includes the possibility of Project Lead the Way (PLTW) curriculum offered in Spanish at the middle school level.
