OASIS is a national nonprofit educational organization designed to enhance the quality of life for adults age 50 and older. A popular program they sponosor is intergenerational tutoring. Across central Indiana, more than 600 volunteers meet with children weekly to work on reading skills. Thirty-two of these volunteers are in the MSD of Lawrence Township!
For many, the value comes not just from the reading, but from the relationships formed. Tutors share that some feel they may get more out of the tutoring sesions than the student! This mututally beneficial relationship not only supports student academic achievement, but also social-emotional wellness.
According to MSD of Lawrence Township Oasis Coordinator, Mary Merchant:
There are many students in our classrooms, who need an extra boost in reading and writing! Working one on one with an Oasis Tutor gives the student an opportunity to develop a relationship with a grandparent figure. Volunteer Tutors are trained to encourage a struggling reader and/or writer and build his/her confidence level! Our tutors feel it is as rewarding for them as well as the student. Many tutors agree that they love seeing the progress that their student has made throughout the year. One of the activities that they work on is in a booklet called, "Words I'm Learning and Words I Know." If a student is stuck on a word, they write it down in the book, review the word, and when the tutor notices that they know the word they transfer the learned word into the "Words I Know" section. At the end of the year they look back and review all the words the student has learned. The students are amazed at all they have learned with their tutors.
The program is currently seeking retired adults interested in tutoring a 1st, 2nd, or 3rd grade student in a Lawrence Township elementary school. No teaching experience is necessary, only the desire to help a student improve his/her reading or writing skills.
Oasis Tutor Training will be offered at no cost on Tuesday, August 15th and Wednesday, August 16th between 10 AM - 2 PM at the Lawrence Education & Community Center (LECC) in BB107.
