The school nurse works to support student success and reduce absenteeism by intervening with the student’s health care needs related to communicable diseases and providing health care assessment, intervention and follow up for all students within the school setting.
A student health inventory should be completed each school year by the parent/guardian. This will ensure that the clinic staff has up-to-date health information.
The clinic will follow guidelines concerning communicable diseases by the Indiana State Department of Health or accepted guidelines by the American Academy of Pediatrics. Healthy children perform at their best. After any illness, your child should be fever free (temp < 100) for twenty-four (24) hours before returning to school. Not all contagious illnesses are accompanied by fever; therefore, the child must also be symptom free for twenty-four (24) hours before returning to school in order to protect others from infection. (Symptom free would include fever, vomiting and diarrhea free for 24 hours.)
• Indiana Law requires that students have an up to date vaccine (shot) record on file: complete with month, day and year of each immunization. This is required for school attendance. Please check the school immunization requirements on the Indiana State Department of Health website, the Lawrence Township School website, or contact your child’s school nurse for information regarding school immunizations.
• The school clinic requests that you update your child's immunization record every 1-2 years or when asked by the school. Copies should be sent to the school clinic during registration or prior to the first day of school.
• Each year the Indiana State Department of Health or the General Assembly may change the immunization requirements for school attendance, therefore the clinic nurses may require that an up to date immunization record be provided to the school.
Immunizations can be given by appointment at your child's physician office or by contacting the Marion County Health Department at 317-221-7300.
