About Indiana Graduates Prepared to Succeed (GPS)

In the MSD of Lawrence Township, we know that students are so much more than a test score. Feedback from educators, families, communities, and employers has consistently shown that there are a number key characteristics critical to a student’s lifelong success. Whether their next steps include enrollment, employment, or enlistment leading to service, we are committed to preparing our students for success beyond graduation.

It is the mission of the Indiana Department of Education to empower Indiana’s educators, families, communities, and employers with a learner-centered, future-focused dashboard that displays how students are building the necessary knowledge and skills—in all grades and in all schools— through the Indiana Graduates Prepared to Succeed dashboard, or Indiana GPS.

The Indiana GPS dashboard seeks to:

Empower educators by providing a variety of essential data points to support continuous improvement of student learning across the K-12 continuum,
Support families and community stakeholders by providing meaningful, relevant, and transparent information about school progress and performance, and
Elevate the highest-performing schools as models of excellence, and identify other schools for additional support

What is the purpose of Indiana GPS?

Education positively impacts a person’s quality of life, health, employment, and living wages. As the global economy changes and technology advances, we must work together to ensure each and every student develops the knowledge and skills needed to prepare them for life beyond high school. When it comes to equipping students with the characteristics that truly matter, every grade level counts, from early learning through graduation and beyond.

Indiana GPS will allows the Department of Education to more intentionally and strategically measure school performance and the level of preparedness our students have for what’s next, empowering the ongoing improvement of Indiana’s education continuum for the next generation of students.

How does the Indiana Department of Education define a successful graduate?

The Indiana Department of Education (IDOE) and stakeholders across the state have worked to define a set of characteristics that best indicate a student’s preparation for success after high school. These characteristics are displayed in Indiana GPS to illustrate how students are supported, starting in kindergarten, to meet those expectations.
