Once again, the night of all nights in Lawrence Township is upon us. The night in which one school makes the 3.5 mile trek to a deafening environment in hopes to return with the coveted traveling trophy. After taking down Lawrence Central 74-56 last year in front of a raucous Jack Keefer Gymnasium crowd, LN returns to the gym and school that stymied them two years ago. In fact, recently, the Wildcats have lost two straight at Lawrence Central and two on a neutral court. LN hasn’t won in Lawrence Central’s gym in the regular season since the 2009 season.
Basketball is a staple in Indiana and Lawrence Township has written its own chapter in the storied record book. Lawrence North has four state titles and one national title from Hall of Fame head coach Jack Keefer while Lawrence Central produced the Mr. Basketball in Kyle Guy only two years ago. This season’s rendition of the LN/LC rivalry features high powered talent on both sides of the ball led by LN senior forward and 1,000 point scorer Kevin Easley as well as rising star Jared Hankins. LN rolls deep with a nine man rotation and will use hard press and athleticism to counter any moves LC has. On the flipside for the Bears, Jaden Terry, Nijel Pack and Donyell Meredith lead a balanced, calm offense that has the ability to heat up from three when in rhythm. Lawrence North comes in ranked No. 7 in the 4A AP Poll while LC remains receiving votes after a 1-1 start.
However, this night isn’t all about basketball. The spectacle for an LN/LC rivalry game regardless of sport is a sight to see. The student sections are packed. Fans from all ages and backgrounds pack a Lawrence Township to see what is arguably the best basketball rivalry in the State of Indiana. It’s one of the few rivalries that sees two schools of this magnitude and this legacy play each other, in the same district. This event brings together everyone in the district for one night. This rivalry shows the great respect and foundation that Lawrence Township has built internally and externally and continues to showcase the talent, hard work, and sportsmanship this district entails.
