A $1,500 sandwich!

For those not familiar with GetGo, it is a large one-stop shop for meals and snacks where you can fill your gas tank, use the ATM, free WIFI, or even shop. A brand new location has just opened at 6990 Pendleton Pike. As part of their opening, they reached out to Lawrence Township and invited students to participate in an "Iron-Chef" like challenge, where students would go up against another local organization in a sub creation contest.FullSizeRender.jpg

What GetGo didn't know is that Lawrence Township has a secret weapon, the culinary program at McKenzie Center for Innovation & Technology! They make a mean sandwich! Even though it was on a day that Bernie's Place was open, three first year students were quick to volunteer, Melanie D., Isaiah H., & Royce W.

Their task was to create a unique 14-inch sub sandwich using ingredients from the story. Ingredients were on one side of the parking lot and the assembly station was on the other. Teams were judged by a GetGo chef on speed (no running allowed!), presentation, and taste. The winning team would receive a check for $1,500 to the non-profit of their choice. The runner up would receive a $1,000 donation. Needless to say, we won! Proceeds were directed to the Lawrence Township School Foundation. The runner up was the Lawrence Hunger Coalition. Kudos to them on a fine competition.
We are proud of Melanie, Isaiah, and Royce for representing Lawrence Township so well, and for giving the other teams a run for their money! Many thanks to GetGo for thinking of Lawrence Township.
